BRADLEY HEWITT WINS JUNIOR DRIVER AWARD
The 2009 Harness Racing NSW awards night, conducted recently at Darling Harbour’s Star City, acknowledged the achievements of local junior harness racing driver Bradley Hewitt. At a gala presentation Bradley was the recipient of the Country Junior Driver Encouragement award recognizing his commitment, improvement and success for the 2008-2009 season.
Throughout the season Bradley recorded in excess of 50 wins en-route to also capturing the Canberra driver of the year award. With his father David Hewitt on the driving sidelines due to injuries, Bradley took over the reigns as the stable’s number one driver. His commitment and success were instrumental in securing the prestigious award which is determined by the stewards of Harness Racing NSW.
Only 18 years of age, Brad is the eldest son of David and Maree Hewitt and is the fourth generation of the Hewitt family to pursue a career in harness racing. He commenced jogging horses when only 8 years old whilst his family lived at Lost River via Crookwell with grandparents Tom and Angela Hewitt. The family then moved into Goulburn a few years ago where Brad devoted himself fulltime to the sport and is now firmly entrenched as a leading driver in the Southern Tablelands.
The award provides for Bradley the opportunity to travel to the United States in September next year where he will attend the famed Little Brown Jug series at Delaware. He will also spend time with prominent standardbred studs and industry people gaining invaluable experience for his career.
For Bradley and his entire family the award, whilst unexpected provided the family with a moment of great pride. When announced as the country winner Bradley stated “I didn’t expect it and I didn’t know what to do. I’d had a good year and was very happy”
