KARLOO MICK STUNNING IN TAKING OUT INAUGURAL GOULBURN SOLDIERS CLUB FRANK & EDNA DAY MEMORIAL
The many harness racing fans who ventured out to the Goublurn Paceway on Thursday afternoon were not disappointed as the 'people's horse' Karloo Mick proved devasting to his opposition when he raced away with the inaugural $10,000 Goulburn Soldiers Club Frank and Edna Day Memorial.
Following a number of hot and uncomfortable days, the Goulburn Club was blessed with a cooler and overcast day which proved perfect for racing. The largest crowd since the club resumed racing last season was present on course and raised their voices as one when Karloo Mick shook off the challenge by Lonestar Legend at the 100m mark to score a convincing and expanding 11m win.
Karloo Mick was quickly away from the second row draw and when passing the mile marker had raced to the front from Kid Courageous who led early. The first quarter was a slow 32.9 and if the opposition had any thoughts they could beat the ageing champion they were quickly dashed.
As the field swung into the straight to hear the bell driver Greg Bennett started applying the pressure with the second quarter going through in 29.5 seconds. The American import Lonestar Legend had enjoyed a cosy one out and one back position but as the field made its way into the back straight Blake Fitzpatrick made a bold move passing the 800m racing up to eye ball the champion. Together they raced down the back straight running the 3rd quarter in 27.8 seconds. Kid Courageous who had sat on Mick's back was gasping for air, Slippery Nemo the death seat horse was dropping out and Magic Operative who followed Lonestar Legend was starting a run three wide. As the field turned for home Lonestar Legend had edged to the lead but with Bennet urging Karloo Mick on he regathered the lead at 100m mark and raced away to score an extending 11m win.
The overall time of 2:43.6 obliterated the previous course record for the 2240m distance returning a mile rate of 1:57.6. Lonestar Legend battled on well for second whilst Hava Bon Voyage ran home strongly to edge out Magic Operative for the third spot.
Karloo Mick returned to the winners circle amidst the cheers of the enthusiastic crowd. Barry Lew was ecstatic with not only the horse's run but the new track record and commented 'this run will have topped him right off for the Inter Dominion'. At the presentation Barry Lew was humble in winning the inaugural Frank and Edna Day Memorial, 'It is so nice to win a race in the Days' honour. The Days are such a legendary trotting family and I feel very proud'.
